Reason to visit Kauai: Six Days, Seven Nights
If you have basic cable, you have plenty of opportunities to see Harrison Ford and Anne Heche in Six Days, Seven Nights. Not the greatest film, but I can't help watching when I run across it, because of the incredible tropical scenery. The ocean, cliffs, beaches, mountains, and waterfalls are spectacular, and make for great escapist fare. (See a good quality trailer on iTunes, or a choppy, grainy one on YouTube. And see some still photos.)
It was shot on Kauai, in locations including the Na Pali coast, Honopu Arch, and Waimea Canyon. And in one memorable scene, Ford and Heche (or most likely, their stunt doubles) take a running leap off the cliff at Makawehi Point, near Shipwreck Beach on the south shore.
Quite a few memorable films were shot on Kauai — Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Arc, South Pacific and others — taking advantage of the diversity of the landscape, but mostly the tropical vistas.
Anyway, seeing Six Days, Seven Nights makes me think Kauai might be the right Other Island to Visit on our Hawaii vacation.
